GST/HST Filing Help

Behind on GST/HST or unsure whether your records are ready for the next return? Bejeweled Accounting & Tax Ltd helps small businesses in Halifax, Edmonton, Nova Scotia and Alberta organise their books and prepare for filing. We work virtually across Canada and confirm the scope, records and responsibilities before an engagement begins.

Start with your records

Reliable filing begins with clear bookkeeping. We review the reporting periods involved, reconcile the relevant accounts and identify missing sales or expense documents. Payment-processor deposits, refunds, credit notes and transfers need to be understood in context. We ask questions about unclear transactions rather than treat a bank description as complete evidence.

Bring your bank and credit-card statements, sales reports, receipts, prior returns and CRA correspondence to the discussion. If you have already filed a return that may need correction, tell us which period and what changed. We can assess the bookkeeping work and discuss the next steps within the agreed scope.

Overdue returns

Start by checking which GST/HST periods are outstanding in your CRA account. CRA requires registered businesses to file for each reporting period, including periods with no activity. Your filing frequency determines the applicable deadlines, so we check the account and official guidance instead of assuming every business follows the same schedule.

Filing and paying are separate responsibilities. CRA permits electronic filing with an amount owing. If paying the full balance is difficult, review the official payment-arrangement options and contact an assigned collections officer promptly. We can help organise the records and cash-flow information; CRA determines the payment arrangement.

Ongoing support

Once overdue work is addressed, a regular bookkeeping routine can make the next filing easier to prepare. We agree when documents will be supplied, which reconciliations and reports are needed, and who reviews and submits the return. Our quote explains whether ongoing bookkeeping, filing support or a catch-up project is included.

Common questions

Must I file a nil return?
CRA says GST/HST registrants must file for each reporting period even when there is nothing to report. Confirm the periods shown in your account.

Can you help if several returns are missing?
Yes. We first review the periods and available records, then agree on the work and priorities.

Should I wait until I can pay?
Address the filing issue and contact CRA about payment options. Filing a return does not automatically settle the balance.

Can penalties or interest be removed?
Relief is a separate CRA process and is not guaranteed. We discuss document preparation within the agreed scope.
